This policy outlines the guidelines for contributors, distribution, copyright, digital expansion, and advertising to ensure clarity and consistency in publication. As PaPHS continues to grow, Historian serves as both a print and digital resource, fostering engagement within the postal history community.
Contributor Rights & Content Usage
- Authors retain rights to their submitted content unless they grant exclusive publishing rights to PaPHS.
- Submitted materials may be archived for historical preservation and journal continuity.
- Contributions may be adapted for digital formats, including the PaPHS website and blog, with author attribution.
- Content Removal Requests: If a contributor wishes to have their work removed from Historian or its digital archives, they must submit a request via email to paphs1974@gmail.com for review. PaPHS will evaluate requests based on archival integrity and publication agreements.
Editorial Process & Privacy
- Author details (name, credentials, and contact information) are used only for editorial communication and publication attribution.
- PaPHS does not share contributor personal data externally.
Print & Digital Distribution
- Historian is primarily published in print.
- Digital editions may be available in the future as part of the expansion into online access of the PaPHS.
- Digital archives will be maintained for long-term research and reference purposes.
- Select journal articles may be featured on the PaPHS blog, providing additional opportunities for discussion and engagement.
Copyright & Republishing Rules
- Articles published in Historian may not be republished without permission from PaPHS.
- Excerpts may be shared for nonprofit educational use with proper attribution.
- Requests for republication or extended usage rights must be submitted via email to paphs1974@gmail.com for review.
Blog Integration & Digital Expansion
- The PaPHS blog serves as an extension of Historian, allowing deeper discussions and member contributions.
- Journal authors may expand on their articles through blog posts, providing interactive content opportunities.
- Blog entries may reference Historian content with proper attribution, linking historical research with community discussions.
Advertising Policy
Historian, the official journal of the Pennsylvania Postal History Society (PaPHS), welcomes advertising that supports the study, preservation, and appreciation of postal history. This policy outlines the standards and procedures for accepting advertisements that align with the values and editorial integrity of the PaPHS.

- Purpose
- To provide relevant advertising opportunities while protecting the reputation, nonprofit mission, and editorial independence of Historian.
- Acceptable Advertisements
- We accept advertisements from:
- Dealers, collectors, and publishers offering postal history materials, literature, or services.
- Organizations or individuals whose offerings are relevant to philately, historical research, or nonprofit collaboration.
- Ads must:
- Be factually accurate and clearly presented.
- Avoid political, religious, or controversial content.
- Not conflict with the mission or values of PaPHS.
- We accept advertisements from:
- Placement and Labeling
- Advertisements will be placed in designated sections and clearly labeled to distinguish them from editorial content.
- Editorial Independence
- Acceptance of advertising does not imply endorsement by PaPHS or Historian. Advertisers have no influence over editorial decisions or content.
- Copyright Responsibility
- Advertisers must submit only materials (text, images, graphics, etc.) for which they hold full usage rights. Submissions must not infringe upon the intellectual property rights of others. PaPHS is not responsible for verifying ownership.
- Right of Refusal
- PaPHS reserves the right to refuse, reject, or remove any advertisement at any time if, in its sole judgment, the content does not align with the Society’s mission, values, or editorial standards—even if previously accepted.
- Submission and Approval
- All advertising content must be submitted in advance for editorial review.
- PaPHS may request edits or clarifications prior to approval.
- Rates and Specifications
- Advertising rates, sizes, deadlines, and technical requirements are available upon request or on the PaPHS website. Discounts may be available for members or multi-issue placements.
- Payment Terms
- Payment is due in full prior to publication unless otherwise agreed upon in writing. Late or incomplete payments may result in delayed placement or forfeiture of reserved advertising space.
- Limitation of Liability
- PaPHS shall not be liable for any loss, damage, or expense resulting from errors, omissions, or the failure to publish an advertisement. Liability is limited to the amount paid for the advertisement in question.
- Indemnification
- Advertisers agree to indemnify and hold harmless PaPHS, its officers, editors, and volunteers from any claims or legal action resulting from the content of their advertisement.
- No Guarantee of Results
- PaPHS makes no guarantees regarding the results or effectiveness of advertisements placed in Historian.
- Refunds and Monetary Remedies
- PaPHS does not guarantee refunds for canceled or withdrawn advertisements. In cases of publisher error or failure to publish as agreed, PaPHS may, at its discretion, offer a refund or substitute placement. Under no circumstances shall the liability of the PaPHS the cost of the advertisement paid.
